For the past two weeks I have been attending a course held near my ex sec school.

Having coffee here brings a flood of memories. Of days so innocent. I remember some of the issues, what seemed so challenging or stressful has been dulled by time. It gives hope and renew my understanding that current issues will be similarly treated, in time.

My ex was frigid. Or maybe it was my fault (NOT) Would it be better if I just had my way with her when I needed her? I didn't, I couldn't, and now we are apart. Is this better for us? For her?

16 years of a no sex marriage and hardly any before. Lots of guilt when I did the deed with others. Why??? A catholic upbringing? Incompatiblilty?

Life sucks and that started me on the road to why I don't believe in Jesus Christ now. Just as well, because I have found the truth.

Note to Pope; the church screwed up BIG TIME. Falling catholic birth rates, increasing divorce rates amongst catholics ... Just as well. Religion is a dinosaur.

Everytime I read about the priests caught fucking girls, women, boys and men, I remember the thousands more dedicated true believers doing good work. Doing the hard slogging while you wear red Prada shoes. Blind faith is really blind. Smoke and mirrors! FUCK YOU and all that you stand for. Power and Money.

It has had been a long while since we met. I have been away constantly. Using that excuse I had avoided getting together with our group of friends and with you.

For me, you were one of the least expected amongst us to go so early. Many of us are older, much older, more frail. I am shocked, now sadden by the realization that we will not meet again, till my time comes.

It was a rainy day yesterday when I got a call from my son's school. He was having a bad cough and the school said he had difficulty breathing.

I told them to send him to the hospital immediately. Luckily it turned out to be just a bad cough. The school just wanted him sent home due to the policies in place for H1N1.

from TV reports;

1. a teenage boy was pulled out of a collapsed school after being trapped for over 2 days. as he was carried away on a stretcher he asked one of the rescuers, "uncle i would like to have a coke!"

2. towns and villages were all isolated by landslides. during the quake and continuing aftershocks, boulders as big as cars rolled down the mountains destroying roads. cellphone stations and landlines were all wiped out and no one knew the situation at these places. paratroopers were sent and they parachuted above rain clouds into the devastation. the captain hollered "the time has come, the party and people has given us this mission. for the country and for our people let's successfully complete our mission." for many survivors, the appearance of these paratroopers gave them hope and notice that rescue was on the way.

3. a policewoman breastfeed eight babies, many of whom who were left motherless.

4. a group of about ten children ages 5-12 have been standing by the side of the road for the past few days. they hold simple placards expressing thanks. when asked, a girl said that they were moved by the efforts of the people who helped them. from the report, it was the rescuers who were touched by the strength of these children.

Pollution threatens national liquor

BEIJING (Reuters) - The water purity of a river tapped to make China's national liquor is being threatened by uncontrolled building of other drinks factories along its banks, the official Xinhua news agency reported Monday.

Kweichow Moutai, maker of the fiery Maotai drink served at Chinese state banquets and used to toast guests ranging from Margaret Thatcher to Kim Il-sung, draws water for the brew from the Chishui River in remote southwest Guizhou province.

But authorities are investigating how 39 illegal alcoholic drinks plants have sprung up by the river, polluting both the air and water, Xinhua said.

"It seriously threatens the environmental security of the Chishui River and the production base of Maotai," it added.

The illegal factories have been fined and ordered to close, the report said.

The drink -- a 53 percent proof tipple made of mountain water, sorghum and grain -- is steeped in Communist lore. Though it traces its origins back two millennia, Maotai has been the drink of choice for generations of Communist Chinese leaders.

It was used to toast the founding of the People's Republic on October 1, 1949. Premier Zhou Enlai welcomed U.S. President Nixon with Maotai during his groundbreaking trip to China in 1972.

It was on Zhou's instructions that all industry was banned from 100 km (60 miles) upstream of the Chishui River site used to make Maotai in order to preserve its purity.

"But following the daily rise in frequency of human activity, the ecological problems of the special ecosystem of the Chishui River have become more and more pronounced," Xinhua said.

came back from a crab feast at yangcheng hu lat night. she has to work today and i am taking a break from a very tedious stressful beijing trip. will be leaving for singapore tomorrow for a few days before heading back to beijing next monday. have to close a multi million deal before christmas.

just relaxing away the morning after a long and stressful week in beijing. everyday was a rush here for meeting, rush there for meeting routine. every meal except for breakfast was a business lunch or dinner. gotten to the point when later in the week, fatigue set in and i kinda sat back and just ate without bothering to talk shop. i think i could be forgiven afterall i am here in beijing second time this month with only a three day break in between.

so a starbucks coffee, a relaxing morning then a 4pm flight back home. 3 nights in singapore and i am off for a hopefully relaxing holiday in bangkok. there is of coz work involved but one grabs what one can get ;-)

had this over the weekend in Beijing. walked into a hugely popular eatery. everyone was having the same thing and it seemed good. one was given a couple pieces of round flat bread that looked like prata only thicker and very very hard.

so one would have to tear these into tiny crumbs. when that you have bowl full of crumbs, mutton soup would be added.

must say in my most humble opinion that it was not really worth the effort. the soup was too salty and the mutton tasted rather strong. now, if the soup was to be replaced by soup kambing then it would be much better.

guess i must be missing singapore more than i care to admit :-)

A Chinese Story - How Alcohol Was Invented

a long long time ago, a man had a dream. in the dream a fairy told him to collect a drop of blood each from three different persons and to add the blood to a brew of rice and water.

when the man woke up he went to the village crossroads and waited. the first person that came along was a scholar carrying books and in the robes of the class. the man then asked for a drop of blood. the scholar consulted the i-ching, decided to provide the man with his blood and went on his way.

the next person who came along as a soldier. the soldier gladly offered his blood without even asking why the man needed it.

the man waited and waited, soon evening came and he was tired. as he was making his way home he saw the village idiot squatting at the side of the road. deciding that the fool would do, the man pricked the fool's finger and took a drop.

when the man reached home, he brewed the rice and water, added the three drops of blood, let the brew sit for a few weeks and alcohol was invented.

thus the nature of alcohol, the first phase of drinking allows us to wax philosophical, we would seem learnt and would have the answers to world problems. the second phase makes us brave and reckless, fearing nothing and wanting to fight everything. and lastly we reach the stage of being fools.

so now you know, LOL

Shanghai

after all the partying in changzhou it is back to work in shanghai. am staying at the ascott in pudong. arranged to have a breakfast meeting at the westin. they serve a great breakfast buffet here.

getting here was a pain, the traffic in shanghai is horrific on workdays. always try to stay near your place of business but that doesn't usually work out for me. i have to meet people all over the city. that's the life of a salesman.

Changzhou - pufferfish

changzhou is two hours car ride out of shanghai. maotai flew in to spend a day with his good friend here. Tao is a young businessman dealing with cooling towers and industrial coatings. He is also a crazy party animal and gourmet of strange exotic chinese cuisine.

for tao, there is a sop (standard operating procedure) for a relaxing weekend. it starts with a brunch of exotic foods. this trip is 'he tun' some sort of pufferfish. it came braised with brown sauce. we had a whole fish each. the meat is firm and very sweet. the spikey skin is served whole and if possible swallowed whole. it is believed that the roughage will help scrap the stomach and intestines thereby cleaning out the internal plumbing system.

this dish is served last coz everything else will taste bland after eating the fish. it is also that they have to wait twenty minutes after the dish is first sampled by the chef. if the chef survives the dish is served otherwise you don't get 'he tun' that day. yes, the fish is very poisonous if not prepared correctly.

yes, quite a surprise! we came over to the traders hotel for breakfast coz the one provided by the ascott sucks.

besides the curry there were also these small square pieces of roti prata. but these were horrible, like corrugated cardboard :(

the curry was ok, too lemak for my taste.
